The day of Keti Koti started with a special Emancipation Service in the Grote Stadskerk on Steenbakkerijstraat. This in connection with 160 years of the abolition of Slavery in Suriname. During this service, the freedom given to the slaves was taken into account. According to pastor Lucia Breeveld, true freedom only comes from our Creator, Jesus Christ. They chanted and prayed for the prosperity and well-being of the President, the Government, the entire community and our nation.
