First lady visits Nabawi school; measuring moment School-Bread pack-Project 2024
First lady Mellisa Santokhi-Seenacherry visited Nabawi School, which was recently added to the 2024 School-Bread PackProject. This was on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024. After a warm welcome from the students and teachers, the first lady was escorted to one of the classrooms where she joined the students in making and eating a sandwich.
The pilot of the School Bread Pack Project started in March 2023 in 40 schools where a total of 4488 students were provided with a daily bread packet and beverage. After this pilot phase, the project will be completed in July 2023 (phase 2) expanded to 7331 students in 71 schools. From October to December 2023 (phase 3) continued this project with the 7331 students, but the applications kept coming in, indicating that the need is great. “Due to the success of the project, options for expansion were looked at and this was also approved,” the first lady indicated. As of January 2024 (phase 4) a total of 13264 students distributed among 117 schools and eight districts are provided with a daily bread packet and beverages. This is guaranteed until August 2024. “This is a huge accomplishment and it makes me feel good to be able to provide breakfast to so many students every day,” the first lady revealed.
The School-Bread Pack Project was initiated by first lady Santokhi with the intention of providing daily breakfast to students in need. Students are offered a high-quality bread package prepared by local bakers. This also seeks to support local entrepreneurs. In addition to this, the children’s dignity and pride are maintained because all 13264 children receive the exact same bread package. The visit to the Nabawi school was therefore an immediate measuring point as to whether quality is guaranteed.
The first lady is very appreciative of the efforts of the school leaders and teachers from all the schools, who together ensure that this project continues to be a success.
